My Grandfather was a rancher and raised cattle using the same methods they use in New Zealand, on the range with natural feed. However, most if not all cattle once ready for market are placed in feed lots to increase their weight prior to slaughter.

Production dairy farming is really unsanitary. The cows in general are confined to very small areas that are contaminated with manure due to large number of animals living in very close quarters. They are fed silage or molded hay that horses can’t eat. I lived behind a small dairy for over 5 years in Utah and it is not a pretty sight.
